Barbarian: I will intimidate the evil tree with a face.

DM: You haven’t been able to hit the tree, what makes you think you can intimidate a semi-inanimate object?

Barbarian: Natural 20

DM: …You shout something about its mother being tissue paper. It’s so psychologically beaten, it spontaneously combusts.

OK. I finished Halo 4

Now will somebody please explain to me what the fuck happened, what was the objective of the game, who the fuck is Didact, what did he want to do and why did he want to do it.

There are three main pillars to Halo 4’s story.

  • Cortana’s rampancy.

Smart AIs have a projected operational lifespan of 7 years, after that they become unstable and slip into a state called rampancy where they start thinking themselves to death. Cortana is over 8 years old by the time that Halo 4 takes place, the emotional core of the story is her deteriorating with John not being able to do anything about it - and how she ultimately saves the day by defeating the Didact and having John before her death.

  • The Ur-Didact’s campaign against humanity.

The Ur-Didact is the central antagonist of the game. The character of the Didact is rather complicated to explain…

There is a trilogy of novels called the Forerunner Saga, written by Greg Bear, which details the events of his life that ultimately brought him to where he is in Halo 4. Halo 4 also has a number of Terminals which provide some of those details in a condensed form (watch here) - unfortunately, because of issues with disk space, the Terminals could not be made accessible in Halo 4’s main campaign so they were put on Waypoint instead.

I’ve written an extensive (50,000 word) dissertation on Halo 4’s story, broken up into 10 separate posts as I go through each level. Here’s the complete list, should you wish to understand more about the central themes, symbolism, conflicts, and character developments in Halo 4, but here are the relevant posts on the Ur-Didact - I cover his character’s history, personality, beliefs, and his motivations which leads into his actions in Halo 4:

  • Humanity’s destiny as inheritors of the Mantle.

The Mantle has been the cornerstone of Halo’s entire story, even though we only learned of it back in 2007. Here, I’ve written up a concise, 1500 word long essay on what the Mantle is and why it’s so important in the story.

To put it in its simplest terms: The Mantle is guardianship over life in the galaxy, and the Librarian (the female Forerunner you meet half way through the game) believes that humanity are the ones destined to inherit that burden. The Ur-Didact disagrees, as he has fought humanity in the past and sees us as little more than corrupt savages, and that the Forerunners are the only ones worthy of the Mantle.

Halo 4’s story certainly requires a good bit of homework because Halo is a multi-media franchise with a story that encompasses 100 billion years of lore - pre-dating the universe itself. It’s a lot more complex, and the narrative is interwoven with the novels a great deal more than any of Bungie’s games were (as they tended to either retcon or flat out ignore them, despite affirming their status as canonical texts time and time again).

Hope I was able to answer your questions, my Wordpress blog is literally a repository of Halo lore so if you need any questions answered (particularly regarding Halo 4) it’s a safe bet that I’ve covered it in one post or other. If not, feel free to message me any questions you have.
